Her expression is hard and piercing, seemingly resolute from a distance. However, once one draws closer, the blurred details of her face begin to focus until fully sharpened, like the bags under her eyes, colored with the black and blue bruises of sweat and hard work, of all nighters pulled for the sake of tossed AI designs and crumpled papers in tin trash baskets, an endless struggle until finally, at the crack of dawn, a flawless design has been produced. It is perfect. They are perfect, more perfect than she could ever be, a mirror of the perfection she once had. Her admiration of these faultless mechanisms goes to no end, and she often spends her sleepless nights tracing her fingers over the gears and cogs of the innermost workings of these machines. This, of course, is just at a first glance. After conversing with this individual for a while, you'll begin to notice the subtle things, like the way her back slumps ever so slightly, her posture caved in, as if whispering to those around her, "I'm not worth your trouble." She screams stay away from me with the clench of her jaw, the tilt of her head, and the crossing of her arms, stay away from me, because she believes that she isn't good enough, not yet, not with the marks of a failed career branding her body so blatantly. She makes no effort to get to know her clients, only speaking a standard issue business greeting "Hello",a tight smile, a nod, and then, "Goodbye." She is not worth your time.

When her father first laid eyes on her mother, sparks flew through the air, and he could swear that he saw the galaxies reflected in her eyes, and when she opened her mouth, her intelligence rang true in his ears; he fell in love. A blossoming scientist and a novice model: endless possibilities awaited. When Valerie was born, her mother hugged her tightly, kissed her forehead, and blessed her with luck for years to come-- not that she'd need it, she said. Just in case.

The first time Louis Thatcher noticed his daughter's talent in science and engineering was when, at the wee little age of thirteen, when she won her school science fair by programming an AI that would keep one company when one was alone. From that moment on, he made it his personal goal to raise young Valerie to become a renowned scientist such as himself, and forced the girl to focus on just that. However, young Valerie always had different plans. She'd always admired her mother's beautiful photos, and the smile that she greeted Val with every time the girl came home from school, and strived to be just like her-- by the age of fifteen, Valerie had decided that she wanted to be a model. This was the source of many of the quarrels the adolescent Val had with her father, as Louis did not want to waste his daughter's potential, and Valerie, while also finding an interest in engineering, held modeling high above everything else on her list of priorities. In turn, Louis pressed the girl to do well in school, using her interest in modeling as the promised reward if she did as he said.

She entered college a year early, as she had skipped a grade in high school. Seventeen year old Valerie majored in engineering and took modeling classes during her spare time. As far as she was concerned, life would be great; she'd earn a degree in AI manufacture, and then wander off into the world of entertainment. However, that all changed when an electrical fire demolished the entire west wing of the university, and left Val with several large and unsightly scars.

She couldn't believe it. In a single night, her dreams had been crushed. She would never be truly beautiful again. Valerie went on leave for the following year, which was spent healing her injuries. When the burns had finished being soothed, Val thrust herself into engineering AIs, a field of study that she'd always been interested in. It was better than sitting around and doing nothing but feeling sorry for herself, she supposed. Valerie focused every ounce of her being into designing AIs that were beautiful--her idea of beautiful, really, soon graduating college at the top of her class. She now works in the second tier of Domus as a well known engineer.
